The River Project

Citizens of Kolkata who are working towards reclaiming the river and its ghats within the social consciousness of people living and visiting the city.

The River Hooghly and its banks played a very important role in the creation and development of the city of Kolkata. 

Now the time is right for the renewal of the river banks and its ghats.

Regular cleaning of the steps of the ghats.


RENEWAL
Renewing the beauty and viability of Kolkata’s riverfront.

 

ARTS & CULTURE
Regular performances along the banks of the river.

What we do

IDENTIFY
We have determined the stretch of the river bank for The River Project.


INITIATE

Develop partnerships with schools, local communities, NGOs, corporates, and the government.
 

INTEGRATE
Bring together artists of different genres from the city and across borders to make it a vibrant art and cultural hub.


IMPLEMENT
Renew the Ghats and the river banks.
Host cultural activities to attract locals and tourists to the area.

Project 1: Champatala Ghat

2022-2023

IDENTIFY: CHAMPATALA GHAT


INITIATE

Applied & successfully obtained funding from Rotary Club of Calcutta.
 

INTEGRATE
Sought permission from Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port
Sought cooperation from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation


IMPLEMENT
Repaired, cleaned and renewed Champatala Ghat
Commissioned wall painting and murals to depict Durgapuja

Inauguration of the renewed Ghat & River Festival held on 4 Feb 2023.

Project 2: Cleanup Drives

2023-2024

IDENTIFY: MULLICK BAZAR GHAT


INITIATE

Schools invited to take participate in cleaning of the Mullick Bazar Ghat.
 

INTEGRATE
Collaborated with River Rangers and Living Waters Museum to set up the programme.


IMPLEMENT
Cleanup drives held on:
18 Nov 2023 with Lakshmipat Singhania Academy
2nd Dec 2023 with Mahadevi Birla World Academy & Birla High School 
6 Jan 2024 with Loretto House.
